L’Afrique me faisait peur, une peur irrationnelle et pourtant…
« J’en ai découvert la pleine puissance au cœur de l’Afrique, au Congo, un matin de 2011, lorsque j’ai vu sortir de la forêt des sorciers Maï Maï couvert de feuilles et de peaux de bêtes. Assis devant eux, couvert de poudre magique et aspergé d’une eau bénite censée protéger des balles, j’ai compris ce jours-là, à moitié en transe, que rien ne serait plus pareil. J’ai découvert plus tard, que ce jour-là, je m’étais simplement senti chez moi en Afrique.
Mon ignorance du continent n’a pas été un frein. Tout est devenu si instinctif, animal.
Il y une lente urgence de vivre en Afrique, l’urgence de profiter pleinement d’un moment présent oublié en occident, un moment présent imprégné d’un mysticisme diffus et insistant. Lorsque la chaude nuit africaine vous enlace, animale, instinctive, elle vous parle d’une harmonie éphémère, subtile, ancestrale, universelle, une harmonie au-delà du réel qui rend si beaux les africains.
L’Afrique me faisait peur, une peur irrationnelle et j’en suis tombé amoureux.
Entrer dans un clan Béninois, partager une cérémonie Egungun, fut tellement naturelle, que je me surprends rétrospectivement d’avoir vécu ces moments d’une incroyable intensité comme une évidence.
Le vodun instaure une vision de vie collective intense qui ne se justifie qu’au regard de la fulgurance d’une mort solitaire, le vodun me parle comme aucune religion ne l’a fait jusqu’à présent.
Il ne s’agit d’ailleurs pas tant pour moi d’une religion que d’une philosophie.
J’y retrouve mon amour de Spinoza tout est en Dieu et Dieu est en tout, nous ne sommes qu’une composante infime de l’univers qui ne nous donne aucune prédominance sur la vie animale, la matière.
Je ne suis pas pour les droits de l’homme, mais pour les droits du vivant. Tout est lié dans un souffle par élan fragile et majestueux.
Photographier, c’est à la fois rentrer dans l’intimité sacrée de l’autre, un partage intime inexplicable, la magie d’une fusion.
Photographier c’est parfois aussi rompre le charme.
Le rapport photographique est complexe, ambivalent, à la fois violent, agressif, sans pitié, parfois je me déteste quand je photographie.
Mais souvent j’atteins les prémices de la transe, une légèreté m’envahit, j’existe, je vibre à l’unisson de l’univers, de la vie. Mais il faut que j’arrête, je dérange, j’inquiète, je brise les distances, bouscule les codes.
Je vacille, un instant perdu, ma vision se brouille, mais il est là en face de moi, il me regarde, me fixe, il pose, mon cœur s’accélère, je sers mon boitier et glisse vers l’extase.
C’est à cet instant que la photographie prend du sens, de la force, de la grandeur. Dans ces moments de doute, d’extrême précarité psychologique et de transe émotionnelle. C’est la première fois que je décris cette sensation qu’il faut je crois avoir vécu pour en comprendre la violence et la douceur. »
